------POLICY FOR PALOMA VALLEY HIGH SCHOOL INTERNSHIPS------

To Fall 2009-10 Interns:

Welcome to the Internship Program at Paloma Valley High School.  We have developed a specific procedure for each prospective intern to help them acquire the internship of their choice.  Please follow the directions and do your part.

The procedure works this way:

On the first day of the semester students will come to Theatre to receive all necessary documentation and
paperwork to have signed by your Internship supervisor and your parent.

Each prospective intern must sign up with their counselor, complete (prior to the beginning of each semester)
an application and a resume, and make sure they meet the requirements.

All Interns must have an email address that they can use as their communication tool in addition to each
week's class meeting.  Email addresses will be used often.

All Interns will receive Work Experience elective credit upon completion of class requirements and completion
of Internship hours.  Our Intern meetings will be planned for the duration of the semester in theater.   It is
critical that you check  echalk email often!

Of the 18 weeks in the semester, the first two are used to place the interns at their Internship site.  The student will be credited 5 hours of reportable time for each week while they are preparing for their internship.  So even, if the student is not placed immediately, he/she is still earning hours.  Once the internship is arranged, the student will report to the Internship site and will spend approximately 5-10 hours a week working there.  Approximately 100 hours will be completed.

All interns will take an active roll in obtaining their internships, as this is part of the internship experience.  This will help students with their interviewing skills and also show them the importance of networking in today's business environment.

Right now, we have limited Internship contacts in our database that were used by past students and which will be available to pursue in the fall.  However, we are always trying to increase our database, as well as offer you the most useful experience that you can have, and so suggest that you set up your own internship so that it offers what you are looking for in your experience.  We encourage you to investigate internships with business associates, acquaintances, or businesses that you may frequent or your family members may be associated with.  Your parents may know of internship leads and may also be able to provide opportunities.

PUHSD will provide Worker's Compensation Insurance coverage for each unpaid intern, and the business will provide if the internship is a paid position.

The Internship Program at PVHS is a program designed to encourage high school seniors to experience the world of work, and explore possible career possibilities to help them in their decision in choosing college majors and various careers.  We feel that it is critical to treat these interns as young adults, and therefore responsible for their attendance, behavior, workload, and all that is involved.  The two most important aspects of this program are accountability and honesty.  We expect all interns to represent Paloma Valley High School with the utmost professionalism and maturity.  These interns are not only representing themselves, but also the high standards ant the accomplishments of our great high school.  Any student who does not live up to these standards will be withdrawn and dropped from the program.
