Attendance

Daily attendance in class is essential to the success in any class.

·        Students are expected to be in class, with materials, and ready to work.

·        It is the student’s responsibility to get to class on time and to get the make up work—if make up work is available. Unexcused absences cannot make up work. Tardies are unexcused absences.

·        The best strategy is to come to class every day.

Purpose of Course

The purpose of this course is to develop successful academic skills to meet the California standards for English. Students are expected to achieve the following goals by the end of this course:

The student will:

ü      Develop better reading skills by reading literature and passing quizzes and worksheets over that literature. This will involve a study of literary terms, idioms, and grammar.

ü      Develop better writing skills by understanding vocabulary used in the literature, and by writing weekly essays. There will also be vocabulary assigned specifically to build skills for college entrance tests.

ü      Develop listening skills and how to follow directions in order to become a successful active learner and reader. When class begins, the students will write a daily log using the SAT question of the day with the answer and rationale. Loss of this log or excessive absences may negatively affect the student’s grade.

Grading and Required Equipment

§         The students will be required to keep their work in a class notebook. Be prepared at all times.

§         The students will be graded based class work, tests, essays, presentations and notebook checks.

A = 89.5-100%, B = 79.5-89.4%, C = 69.5-79.4%, D = 59.5-69.4%, & F = 59.4 or below

NO LATE WORK WILL BE ACCEPTED. However, a parent conference may be scheduled in certain cases. FAILURE to do class work on the day assigned will result in a grade of “zero.”  These “zero” grades will be averaged with their other grades and can result in FAILING the entire course.

Out of Class Passes

Passes out of class mean that you may miss something vital. A pass will be given no more than once every two weeks. Plan ahead. You are limited to 10 passes a semester, or about 3 a grading period.

School and Class Rules

Students are expected to know and follow all of the school rules.

v     Students are not to chew gum, drink, or eat in class.

v     Students will treat other students (and the teacher) with the respect.

v     Students will stay on task and will complete all assignments in class.

v     Students will come to class everyday and be on time.

v     Students will not disrupt class in any way.

Cells Phones and other electronic devices should not be in class, visible to others. Keep all devices put away or don’t bring them to class at all.
