English I Course Description:

In this freshmen English course, students will read short stories, novels, non-fiction work, poetry, and drama, while also focusing heavily on writing skills.  Developing good writing techniques when writing literature based essays, persuasive essays, research papers, and journal entries will be stressed.  Students will be challenged to think critically using various learning strategies such as dialectical journals and Bloom’s Taxonomy.  Following the Jane Schaffer model, students will be required to write several timed-writings, essays, and literature based papers in order to improve writing skills.  Students will improve research skills utilizing the MLA format.  In this course, students will develop the competency necessary to perform well on the High School Exit Exam.  The topics in this class are taught according to the California State Standards to help prepare students for success in upcoming grades.  The goals for English II are:

 

            ° To improve reading comprehension

             ° To improve vocabulary development

            ° To improve literary analysis

            ° To learn different modes of writing essays (descriptive, persuasive, research)

            ° To improve Academic writing skills according to California State Standards

            ° To learn and improve study skills
